Take one or two of your current products to a local engineering school and offer awards to those students who submit the best useable design improvements or ideas.
Possible guidelines for your engineering contest:
- Give examples of your products to the students for redesign.
- Provide 10 or 20 thought provoking ideas to get them started.
- If an idea is useable or provokes one of the company’s own engineers to make a related improvement, give the award to the student or groups of students if they wish to band together.
- Give cash awards or ask if payments would be preferred against their student loan debt.
- Run the contest every quarter or once each year.
- Ask questions concerning speed, ease of use, design, flexibility, alternative uses, different colors, improved handles, better safety features or any other design feature that is determined worthy of consideration on new future models.
- Make sure your firm announces the winners and has the university provide plenty of positive public relations for the event. Post pictures of your winners in your facility for visitors to see.
