Companies are guilty of allowing too many people to make decisions on shipping methods for packages, products, supplies without considering cost. Assign one person in the organization to analyze the company’s freight/postage costs and limit the number of people who have the ability to send items overnight or air freight. After analyzing several weeks or months of freight costs, allow the assigned person to establish rules for shipping items paid for by the company regardless of where it was shipped. The rules should be that the only way something is expedited is through an approval process. Consideration should cover whether it is billable to customers, is it a company shipping error or not or is it clearly unimportant and needs to be regularly mailed by the U.S. Post Office (slower but much much cheaper).
