IDEA for Intern: Identify energy waste, buy energy saving gadgets and get them installed.
Instead of trying to get your current staff to stop what they are doing and try to install energy saving gadgets throughout your organization, hire a college engineering student to implement this program. Have him (with engineering or electrician help) identify all the areas of the company where these devices can be installed (i.e. water-saving flush toilets, water-saving flush urinals, sink water turnoffs, automatic light dimmers or off switches, heat and air programmable thermostats, timers on lights). Consider paying your college student a premium depending on how quickly he arranges to get these items installed and starts the cost savings for the company. Give him the ability to hire an outside contractor to do the installation. Compare your electric bills before and after these installations. The most important thing is to get the energy savings started without excuses. Do not try to have a permanent employee do it because it will be delayed.
