GPI 320 – Always hire great key candidates regardless of the organization chart.
When you find a great candidate, hire him because they do not come along often. Most of your supervisors and managers are reluctant to terminate mediocre or even lousy employees. This is because they do not recognize mediocre or average performance.
Hire the experienced candidate for what they bring to your firm regardless of headcount. Your current supervisors only realize how mediocre their own employees are when they spend three or four months with the new guy with a solid background. At that point, it is evident that the previous organization chart was deficient of talent.
Most supervisors do not see the lack of talent beneath them. Too many supervisors do not recognize this lack of talent because they themselves have never worked with good or superior people. You must force the experience on them.
You do not have time to tie a termination to the new hire. You cannot expect your current inexperienced supervisors to recognize subpar performance if they have not seen it themselves. If you tell them you are not hiring another until they take someone out, they will inevitably pick the wrong person or they will delay doing it. You do not have time nor can the company wait for competent sales staff. If these supervisors have not worked anywhere that taught great managerial performance, they will not bring that trait to your firm so you must keep hiring.
You will have to train your inexperienced supervisors. You will have to hire someone who will force it on them. Hire a guy with a great track record who has the ability to upgrade those under him.
