GPI 437 – Tell customers how to save money and you will make more of it.

Share with your customers how to minimize their cost buying your products and you will sell more of them.  Why?  Any time you educate your customers, they remember who told them.

Examples of educating your customer:

  • Teach your customers how to store food items once opened in order to stretch their food dollar. Add this as an instructional sticker on the food package or post the preservation notice in the produce section.
  • Teach your customers how to change and add the correct amount of oil to their car. Consider holding classes to instruct customers how to perform this task on their car.
  • Teach your customer to add the correct amount of air to their tires and subsequently how to measure it. Give them a flat tire and tell them to go at it.
  • Teach your customer how to prepare a wall for sanding, base coat and paint before they leave the store.  Let them practice on a demonstration wall if desired.
  • Teach your customers how to make their own salsa in the produce department while you sell them the ingredients. Let them have the first batch purchase at 30% off so they can see taste their savings.
  • Teach people how to use power tools to do tasks at home themselves while you sell them the tools, nails, screws and other hardware they will be buying.
  • Teach people how to use a carpet shampooer and sell them all of the hardware and liquid cleaner. Let them shampoo a carpet in the store and show them how to use the machine.  Let them operate it just before they are convinced to buy one.
  • Teach people how to cultivate indoor and outdoor plants before selling them plant food, pots, fertilizer and seeds. Give them instructions with every plant how to feed, water and gather seeds to produce more plants. Give them future discount coupons for free plants and seeds during the next growing season.
  • Teach people how to repair their lawnmowers, add oil, change blades, sharpen blades, remove broken guards or belts. Do this before they buy planters, weed-eaters, edgers, walk-behind mowers or any of the hundreds of parts these machines require.
