Hire an intern to do a daily assignment, a daily report or accomplish or calculate something that needs daily evaluation. Many measurements when published cause people to react which is healthy for the company. Have the intern take responsibility for some regular task even if it’s as simple as taking and placing the weekly office supplies order. The assignment will demonstrate follow-through and an ability to take ownership, especially he comes back with suggestions on lower cost items each week. Have him or her calculate and chart daily sales, daily returns, items manufactured, sold or made. Have them keep track and publish earned incentives, oil prices, gas futures, lumber prices, hog futures, number and value of new customers’ sales and sales margins. Have them calculate and publish product margins (best to worst), all of the company’s store sales (highest to lowest), best and worst-performing sales personnel (by sales order dollars), office supply usage (cost) or scrap generation (cost) or revenue (sale of scrap). The calculations are specific for your company. The daily publishing helps managers take action when it is seen necessary.
