Suggestion boxes put on the wall are intimidating to some. Employees who want to make suggestions complain about the very people who are assigned to empty the box. They are angry or upset or do have a good idea but do not want confrontations with certain personnel. If the contents of the suggestion box is opened and passed around to many people, your company will most likely have less participation. Offer suggestion makers postage paid cards to fill out and mail to a third party off site or an independent party. This works particularly well when customers are able to mail suggestion or complaint cards independently rather than deposit them in a box. Offer a toll-free number for customers to vent or complain about the products. Cards will probably be filled out by angry customers but it is worth it to read what has upset them because there is truth in their criticisms. You might try to plant a question of the month or week and have postage paid cards to fill out if people feel uncomfortable putting them back in a box. Give the suggestor the option to not sign the card. Forward all of the cards to an independent team for evaluation. You should be happy to get a lot of negative cards. You can do something about their issues they write about. Worry about the fact very few write comments. That means they most likely have given up your firm.
