Reward the good employee. In some way, make certain this employee is openly rewarded for good efforts and winning over competitors. This employee’s good efforts need to be related directly to the continued financial success of the company. It is easy to report problems but it is even more important and vital to show positive progress.
Questions to ask all employees in order to find the best to emulate and reward for their contributions:
- What employee that you have observed in the plant clearly does a great job? Look for the well admired because they are actually running your firm and you do not know it. Watch the results of this question to find out if there is any one person in your facility that is admired. He or she can be a supervisor or not. They can have a managerial role or just working on an assembly line. Their personal attributes may be admired so much that they are well known and trusted by several employees. If you discover that you have one of these people working for your firm, you need to find out why employees pointed to him and reward him for his admirable work ethic.
- Which employee would you like to be more like?’ The answer to this question will normally be the guy that takes his time to train the employee on a machine or how to perform a job. He is patient, takes questions easily, follows up and treats the employee respectfully. He may or may not be the supervisor, which is a shame. Watch for these people because they are great leaders and because they manage by demonstrating and helping rather than dictating.
- If you have observed an employee who you think would be a great supervisor or someone good at training, who is that person?
- Which employee have you personally seen in the past do more than expected on a normal daily basis in getting the job done?
- Based upon his or her work ethic and how he gets things done which employee would you prefer to work with? Why do you say this?
- Which employee helps other employees more than any other?
- Which employee do customers like the best, that you have observed many times yourself? What is the reason for your answer?
- What do you think customers like about the person you identified as being the ‘best liked or most respected employee?
- What employee has helped you learn more than any other? This does not have to be your supervisor.
Is there one person who stands out from this question? If so, is this a good person for a training position? - What employee is liked by the customers more than any other?
